e-Schools is a project funded by
the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), which is using
the computers donated by the Government of the People's Republic of China (PRC),
in cooperation with the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of
Macedonia (MoES), to introduce a new concept of information and communication
technology use in education.
The E-School.mk
project began with installation of computer labs in all 91 secondary schools in
the Republic of Macedonia. Each of these schools is identified with the
E-School-the link of tomorrow logo and can be clearly recognized by the
unique colors of the E-School computer lab, that the students and
teachers painted using their own creativity.
The following step was to
improve the quality and relevance of teaching, using ICT applications that
facilitate communication, networking and interaction among the teachers and the
students. In this respect, series of trainings were conducted for 2 teachers
from each secondary school, focusing on use of ICT through project based
learning strategies and networking. As a result of the first round of training,
each school team developed a school based project including students and other
teachers. The common thread for all projects was the use of ICT in a variety of
topics, addressing different needs from the school and the community. This
cohort of 180 teachers that finished their second round of training in August
2005, now serves as the core group of trained teachers that are further
disseminating their skills and knowledge in use of ICT to a greater number of
teachers in their respective schools.
The E-School.mk
project is actively involved in all primary schools as well, by successfully
installing computers in 360 primary school facilities. Series of trainings will
follow for primary school teachers, enabling them to use, apply and integrate
ICT in their daily work with the students.
The E-School.mk
project is also in a process of developing an education portal that will link
the teachers and the students in a virtual working environment. The education
portal would provide on-line resources for the school directors, teachers and
the students and would enable them to easily share their experiences and
practices. The education portal will mark the beginning of a new quality of the
education system in Macedonia, thus bringing it closer to the modern education
trends and practices in the world.
The Ministry of Education and
Science, as well as the Bureau for Development of Education are closely involved
in all trainings and activities and are providing direct support both to the
E-School.mk project team members and the teachers as well, ensuring
that the quality of education in Macedonia is improved by integrating the use of
ICT into the teaching process.
